MONDAY 16 NOV 1998 - DAY 2 - ROUNDS 5 - 8

China are showing their strength as an emerging chess nation with two children, Bu (boys 13-14) and Qian (girls 10-12) playing on the top boards with a perfect score. Other players with a perfect score include Aveskulov of Ukraine (boys 10-12), Hera of Hungary (boys 10-12), Caoili of Philippines (girls 10-12).

In the vital clash between Qian of China and Caoili in the girls 10-12 category, it was the Philippine girl who won through. She went on to win the next two rounds too, maintaining her perfect score. Only Hera of Hungary has managed a similar feat by the end of Round 7.

This afternoon the children have the chance to enjoy Disneyland Paris. Later they will be entertained at the Wild West Show.

Games can be followed live on the internet at www.disney.co.uk. The site also features pictures and comments from World Champion Anatoli Karpov.

Round 5 - Boys 10-12

Aveskulov UKR v Hera HUN

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Bg5 a6 8. Na3 b5 9. Nd5 Be7 10. Bxf6 Bxf6 11. c3 O-O 12. Nc2 Bg5 13. h4 Bh6 14. Nce3 Bxe3 15. Nxe3 Ne7 16. g4 Bb7 17. Bg2 Ng6 18. Rf1 Re2+ 34. Kb3 f2 35. a4 f6… and Black won a few moves later. 0-1

The opening - the Sveshnikov variation - is a Hungarian speciality, and Imre Hera played it with great skill. White launched an aggressive pawn charge at the beginning, but Hera countered it easily with a deft knight manoeuvre (18…Nf4). Once the black knight was embedded on this fine outpost, life was always going to be difficult for the Ukrainian. In the end the knight hopped into White’s position and forced a winning rook and pawn endgame.

Round 5 - Girls 10-12

Qian CHN v Caoili PHI

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 e6 5. Nf3 h6 6. Bh4 dxc4 7. a4 Bb4 8.Qc2 Nbd7 9. e3 b5 10. Be2 a6 11. O-O Bb7 12. Rad1 Qa5 13. Ra1 Qb6 14. Rfd1 O-O 15. e4 Rfc8 16. e5 Nd5 17. Ne4 Qc7 18. Arianne Caoili of the Philippines grabbed a pawn early on in the game and hung onto it to force a victory. It wasn’t so simple though: she had to survive some heavy pressure from White first. In particular the white knight on e4 gave her some problems, though the black knight next door on d5 was a rock.

Round 6 - Boys 13-14

White Paragua PHI v Bu CHN

1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 Bf5 4. O-O e6 5. d3 h6 6. Nbd2 Be7 7. Qe1 Bh7 8. e4 dxe4 9. dxe4 O-O 10. Qe2 Na6 11. e5 Nd7 12. Ne4 Nac5 13. Nxc5 Nxc5 14. Rd1 Qe8 15. Be3 Na4 16. c3 Bc5 17. Nd4 Rb8 18. Qxg6+ Ke7 1-0

The game appeared to be drifting towards a draw when the Chinese player made a great error. On the 30th move Black is unable to take the bishop as the white queen will swoop down and give checkmate. Once White had the extra piece the victory took a little time but was quite simple.

A marathon! Actually Black had a great position after she won the pawn on move 54: she made slow but sure progress in the rook and pawn ending that followed. However the Hungarian girl, playing White, did not make the most of her early chances. Black’s king, wandering over to the queenside did not look too secure.
