Med en sikker sejr over Shirov i 8. runde øgede Kasparov føringen til to fulde point, idet Judit Polgar samtidig tabte til Karpov. Hendes første nederlag og Karpovs første sejr. Rundens sidste parti, Leko mod Grischuk, sluttede remis.
