7. runde gav endnu et bevis på, at eksverdensmester Karpov har spillet for lidt til at fastholde sin tidligere så eminente sikkerhed. I tidnød blev en lovende stilling mod Grischuk sat over styr, og dermed er Karpov alene på sidstepladsen. I den anden ende af tabellen kiksede Kasparov en gevinst mod Judit Polgar, og partiet sluttedemed evig skak. Også Shirov - Leko sluttede remis.
